PROGRAMS-HALF DAY TRIPS
The Castles of Hrvatsko Zagorje
Let's set off to Varaždin, Baroque town, and then through hillocky Zagorje, to Trakoscan Castle, finest romantic castle in Croatia.
Not missing out on Veliki Tabor castle either, with the legend of pretty Veronika Desinicka, walled up for her beauty and impudence. Lunch tasting local dishes in a restaurant just across the road, with a fine view of the castle.
Next stop is Castle Bežanec, recently restored, and a fine example of a classicist palace.
A place not to miss is Kumrovec Ethno village, on the Sutla River, with the typical rural architecture and folk heritage of the areas. It was here that Josip ' Tito' Broz, once lifetime president of Yugoslavia, was born and brought up. On the way back to Zagreb, a stop at Medvedgrad, with its Homeland Altar, from which there's a stirring view of Zagreb and environs.
City sightseeing on foot and by car
We start off from the heart of the city, the main municipal square, Trg Ban J.Jelačića, which dates from the 17 th century, its buildings ranging in style from classicism to Secession and Modernism. The oldest is at number 15 and was built 1827. The name of the city itself is said to have derived from a story connected with the square. A certain landowner called a girl standing on the spot and said: ' Manduša, zagrabi ( scratch, dig ), as a result of which a well was found, and the town was called Zagreb.
Then come to the essential sights of the National Theatre, the Mimara Museum, the Building of the Law Faculty, the Museum for Art and Craft and other interesting features of Trg Maršala Tita. We continue along Gundulićeva ulica to the Upper Town to the houses of the Government and the Parliament, to Katarinin Trg or square, Kamenita Vrata, the Stone Gate, with its legend of the legend of the Bloody Bridge, Kaptol and Gradec. Kaptol, or the Cathedral Close, and the Cathedral itself are our next ports of call. Via the street of Nova Ves we set off towards the mountain of Sljeme and its observation point, and the Homeland Altar, which provides a great view of Zagreb. A visit to a mall is an option.
Sightseeing of Samobor and lunch in Gabrek or Kalin
Not a great deal of time is required to look round Baroque Samobor, which entails a reward of a gastronomic nature, for Samobor, as it was known of old and sometimes today, has long been known as a excursion place for Zagreb people, particularly for Sunday lunches. We will settle on our choises according to the visitors' tastes and cullinary preferences.
