The crown jewels of the park are 16 lakes which are divided into two sections, Upper and Lower Lakes. The Upper Lakes, including the largest and deepest Kozjak Lake ( 47 m ), are surrounded by forests and luscious vegetation while the Lower Lakes have more karstic features and steep shores surrounded by cliffs with several caves. The main attraction of the park are Waterfalls. You will see them and hear them everywhere you go. The 78 m tall Big Waterfall is connecting the Plitvica stream with the Lower Lakes and that body of water is flowing into the Korana River. The whole region is covered with snow from November till the end of March. In December and January, all the lakes freeze over creating a magical winter landscape.

The Castles of Hrvatsko Zagorje and Varazdin

From: Zagreb
When: Year long
Duration: 8 - 12 hours
Let's set off to Varaždin, Baroque town, and then through hillocky Zagorje, to Trakoscan Castle, finest romantic castle in Croatia. Not missing out on Veliki Tabor castle either, with the legend of pretty Veronika Desinicka, walled up for her beauty and impudence. Lunch tasting local dishes in a restaurant just across the road, with a fine view of the castle.
Next stop is Castle Bežanec, recently restored, and a fine example of a classicist palace
A place not to miss is Kumrovec Ethno village, on the Sutla River, with the typical rural architecture and folk heritage of the areas. It was here that Josip ' Tito' Broz, once lifetime president of Yugoslavia, was born and brought up. On the way back to Zagreb, a stop at Medvedgrad, with its Homeland Altar, from which there's a stirring view of Zagreb and environs.
